Wellness tourism – a new wave that hits world travel’s shore

foodnhotelvietnam - March 26, 2019

Over the past few years, wellness is getting more and more concerned by the world. From organic products consumption to healthy habits making, humanity even goes “green” with everything around them like spa service, working & living places and beauty products in order to find inner peace and also stay healthy. Taking advantage of this wave, wellness tourism rises to be a new trend of world travel.

Understanding “Wellness Tourism”

“Wellness Tourism” is a new tourism type and not so easy to particularly define in Vietnam. Wellness tourism can be known as a combination of staying healthy and living tranquilly, whose results are healthy experiences and spiritual balance for tourists. This new type of tourism is very potential in Vietnam but not yet well – oriented nor effectively exploited.

“We have seen wellness become a full-blown industry.” – said Mr. Andrew Gibson, co-founder of the Wellness Tourism Association. Wellness tourism is no longer a short – term investment trend but has become a long – term investing mindset in hospitality business. This would be wise to heavily market to this new type of traveler — which shouldn’t be too hard a task. Smart destinations only have to stay focused on exploiting wellness service in order to attract luring tourists who want to escape otherwise stressful lives or further their quest toward inner peace.

Massive increasing numbers

As of 2013, wellness tourism had been available in 63 countries and the number increased to 100 by 2018; Vietnam is also a potential growth country for this sector. According to Wego and TrustYou, the cities of Hanoi and Hoi An, which are full of wellness potentiality, have placed in the top 10 of the best tourist destinations of wellness tourism services in Asia. In particular, the capital of Vietnam, where tourist can easily enjoy a pure air, peaceful atmosphere and admire historical destinations, accounts 87.37% positive feedback from tourists and is ranked in top 5.

However, this type of tourism requires high-spending tourists. According to Global Wellness Institute (GWI)’s report, wellness tourism market grew 639 billion dollars in 2017 and that number only stands to rise. World travelers made 830 million wellness trips in 2017, 139 million more than in 2015.

The more and more people tend to be interested in health, the bigger and bigger Wellness tourism will grow with an ideal of “wellness drives the will of travelling”.  GWI also predicts that wellness tourism may see a 7.5 percent increase per year. By 2020, the sector will be able to reach 919 billion USD and account for 18 percent of the proportion of the world travel market. Unfortunately, despite owning lots of wellness destinations and landscapes, Vietnam has not yet found the right way to invest and exploit this new gold mine. The race to meet wellness tourist’s demands seems quite far for Vietnam to reach the finish line.

Vietnamese hospitality and the chance of a lifetime

Having the whole package of potentiality, Vietnam should take advantage of this momentum and prioritize wellness in every tourist’s service. In order to support Vietnamese hospitality’s investor and enterprises’ owner to have a comprehensive look about Wellness Tourism, SES Vietnam Exhibition Services Co., Ltd – the Organiser of Food &Hotel Vietnam 2019, in partnership with HCMC Department of Tourism and Outbox Consulting Co., Ltd, presents the Vietnam Hospitality Managing Director Forum – CEOTalks 2019 entitled “Riding the wellness wave”.
